Chapter Thirteen

Clouds mottled the dark sky, and when Wyn shivered and wished she had her coat, Tom took her hand. She wasn’t sure if it was to warm her or to distract him from his own thoughts. His face had been grim since the cafe.

Becky leaned in. “How long are we going to be gone? They’ll lock the gates in an hour.”

“I don’t know. What will Dagmar do when she finds out we’re gone? She has to know.” Wyn lowered her voice. “The gargoyle that got in the academy wasn’t quiet about it.”

“What?” Tom turned to her again. Becky looked at the cobblestones.

“Nothing,” Wyn said. He shrugged.

She wanted to tell him, but could Pip be right about this? The fewer people who knew the better? The filaments on the edge of her vision seemed to be weaving a wall between her and Tom, and if she didn’t tear it apart soon, she would never be able to.

The street lamps burned weakly, and warehouses and factories lined the streets. Only a few people walked the same direction they did, and they were dressed for dancing. If not for these people, Wyn would feel more nervous than she already did. She stepped closer to Tom so their shoulders brushed.

“So where are you taking us?” She tried to say it casually, but her voice cracked. He smiled.

“I know, looks a little shady, doesn’t it? I won’t lie, it’s not the best part of town, but the best dance hall in Morane is here. Believe me, I’ve looked. You go too close to the gates and they’re all bright lights and flare to impress visitors or whoever might be just crossing through the gate. Or were just crossing before this whole civil-war-and-you-need-your-papers stuff.” His eyes hardened, but he shook his head and then smiled. “You go too close to the palace and it’s stuffy with all the dignitaries.” He leaned his head down to hers. “But down here in the warehouse district, it’s real. You’ll see. You have a dance hall where you’re from?”

Wyn nodded. She opened her mouth to speak, but closed it again. The reasons why she had to go to the dance hall stabbed her heart. She looked back at him, his eyes flashing in the light from a street lamp, and he pulled her closer to him. He looked at her like she was the best thing on earth right then. She would tell him. If she couldn’t tell him about being the Binder, she could tell him everything else. And maybe eventually, she could tell him about that too.

“I went to one almost every night after . . . after my mother died.” There, she had said it. It had stumbled out, but now that it was gone, she felt lighter.

Tom squeezed her hand. “When did it happen?”

“Six months ago.”

“I’m sorry, Wyn.”

If he had said the same thing a day ago, she would have shrugged. The effect of “I’m sorry” had worn off only a few weeks after her
